Software files

The files needed to run Topicscape are installed in:

C:\Program Files\Topicscape Pro 2
C:\Program Files\TopicscapeLite
   or
C:\Program Files\TopicscapeSE

In 64-bit Windows versions, they will appear in

C:\Program Files (x86)\...etc...

You can override these folder locations during installation if you want to store the program files elsewhere, but you cannot choose a network drive or share because all files and folders must be on the machine on which Topicscape is installed.

Data files

During installation, the data folders will not be set up. Instead, when you run it for the first time, Topicscape will prepare its data folder, either for you alone or for all users of the PC (at your choice). It will ask if you want to allow other users to see your data. Each Topicscape that you make will have a folder inside a folder called My Topicscapes, to hold all its files and its database.

Separating users' Topicscape data

If a computer has two users (or one user with two accounts), and their data are to be separated, both will have to install Topicscape under their separate accounts, and two sets of Topicscape files will be established. So if a computer has an Administrator 'Janet' and a Limited User 'Billy', and both use Topicscape and decide not to allow other users to see their data, there will be separate folders for their Topicscapes.

Assuming that Janet does not share her password with Billy, Billy will not be able to see Janet's Topicscapes, but as an administrator, Janet will be able to see Billy's. Billy could protect the data in his Topicscapes by encrypting his My Topicscapes folder, and keeping his password secret. There is a more detailed discussion about the options for securing your Topicscape here.

Where Topicscape's data folders are set up by default depends on your Windows version:

Windows 8, 7 and Vista

C:\Users\Billy\My Topicscapes\
C:\Users\Janet\My Topicscapes\

Windows XP and 2000

C:\Documents and Settings\Billy\My Topicscapes\
C:\Documents and Settings\Janet\My Topicscapes\

Sharing users' Topicscape data

If the users want to share their data, the default can be overriden, and only one installation of Topicscape will be required.

Then you will choose the option to allow 'all users' of this computer to see your data. That will mean that, whether you log on as an administrator or a Limited User, you will have access to your Topicscapes. On the first occasion that you run Topicscape using your administrator account, you will again be asked if you want to share your data. If you replied 'Yes' as a Limited User you will probably want to reply 'Yes' as an administrator.

In this case your folders will be set up here:

Windows 8, 7 and Vista

C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\My Topicscapes\

Windows XP and 2000

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Topicscapes\

Windows 98 and Windows ME

Only Topicscape Lite can be run on these early version of Windows.

The default folder for Topicscape's files in this case will be

C:\My Topicscapes
